Basic Abasa Surah: 'Abasa (1)

He Frowned and Turned Away — An Eternal Lesson in Welcoming the Seeker of Knowledge

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
— عبس الآية 1
Verses: "He frowned and turned away (1) because there came to him the blind man (2) but what would make you perceive that perhaps he might be purified (3) or be reminded and the reminder would benefit him"

Reflection:
Among the greatest things in this surah: Allah revealed verses rebuking His noble Prophet — and the Prophet transmitted and narrated them without concealing them. This is evidence of the truthfulness of prophethood: if the Quran were from himself, he would not have recorded a rebuke of himself.

Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him): He came asking about Islam — blind and poor — while the Prophet was occupied with the leaders of Quraysh, calling them to Islam. Humanity values the powerful; Allah values those who will be "purified."

"Perhaps he would be purified": A question carrying reverence — you do not know what readiness for purification and remembrance lies in this poor man's heart.

Lesson for teachers and callers:
  • Do not judge a student by his appearance or social status
  • The most humble and needy are usually the most receptive and benefiting
  • Allah sees what is in every person's heart that you cannot see
