Surah: Al-Alaq (1)
Read in the Name of Your Lord — The First Word of Revelation Was a Command to Read
ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ
— العلق الآية 1
Verses: "Read in the name of your Lord who created (1) Created man from a clinging substance (2) Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous (3) Who taught by the pen (4) Taught man that which he knew not"
Reflection:
The first word that revelation brought to humanity was: "Read." Not "pray" or "fast" or "strive" — but Read. In this divine choice lies a profound civilisational message: the nation that reads is the nation that rises.
"In the name of your Lord": Reading is tied to its source — no reading benefits except what is tied to belonging to Allah. Reading disconnected from Allah may corrupt rather than reform.
"Who taught by the pen": Allah linked creation and knowledge in successive verses — the One who created man from a clinging substance is the very One who taught by the pen. The Creator is the Teacher.
Ibn al-Qayyim said: "He was commanded to read first because it is the key to knowledge — and knowledge is the key to all good."
Lesson: Every moment you spend in beneficial knowledge — reciting, reading, or learning — is compliance with the first divine command sent down to humanity.
