Intermediate Al-Masad Surah: Al-Masad (1)

Perish the Hands of Abu Lahab — The Eternal Model of Opposition

تَبَّتۡ يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبٖ وَتَبَّ
— المسد الآية 1
Verses: "May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and may he perish (1) His wealth and what he earned will not avail him"

Reflection:
Surah Al-Masad is unique in the Quran: it names a specific person and announces his punishment before his death. Naming Abu Lahab — who was the Prophet's uncle — proves that the Quran shows no favour to kinship or status.

Why by name, not by description?
Scholars say: because "Abu Lahab" was his well-known nickname — and the Quranic text thereby becomes a historical testimony about this specific individual with no ambiguity.

"His wealth and what he earned will not avail him": Abu Lahab was among the wealthiest of Quraysh — yet his wealth, his kinship to the Prophet, and his status availed him nothing when the divine verdict came.

Proof of prophethood in this surah: The surah was revealed while Abu Lahab was alive — and foretold his death in disbelief. Had Abu Lahab embraced Islam, he would have invalidated the surah. But he died a disbeliever, making this surah one of the proofs of prophethood.

Ibn Kathir said: "This surah was revealed before Abu Lahab's death — and it contains knowledge of the unseen: that he would die in disbelief."

Lesson: Wealth, status, or kinship to the Prophet will not avail anyone on the Day of Reckoning — the measure is: "The most righteous among you."
