Surah: Al-Baqarah (154)
Do Not Say of Those Killed in Allah's Cause They Are Dead — The Barzakh Life and the Concept of Death
وَلَا تَقُولُواْ لِمَن يُقۡتَلُ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَمۡوَٰتٌۢ
— البقرة الآية 154
Verse: "Do not say of those killed in Allah's cause: They are dead. Rather they are alive, but you do not perceive." (2:154) — A prohibition on one word: "dead." Not because it is hurtful — but because it is false. The martyr is truly alive in a life beyond living perception: "you do not perceive" — we are the ones limited in perceiving that life, not them absent from it. Barzakh life: martyrs are with their Lord being provided for (3:169). Their souls are in the crops of green birds roaming in Paradise — not a metaphor but a revealed reality. "In Allah's cause" — the essential qualifier. Death in Allah's cause transforms the ending into a beginning. Blood does not extinguish life — it illuminates its gateway. Lesson: the Quranic correction of concepts — death is not a universal ending; some of it is a transition to a higher life.
