Obey Allah, Obey the Messenger, and Those in Authority — Obedience and the Reference Point for Disputes

أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَمۡرِ
— النساء الآية 59
Verse: "O believers, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. If you dispute about something, refer it to Allah and the Messenger." (4:59) — "Obey" is repeated with Allah and the Messenger — not with those in authority = their obedience is conditional on non-disobedience. Reference for disputes: the Book and Sunnah, not pure reason or popular consensus. "That is better and fairer in outcome." The verse organizes the full hierarchy: Allah above Messenger above rulers above individuals. Lesson: legal and political disputes refer to text, not opinion — and obedience to rulers is not absolute.
