Advanced Madd

Madd Lazim — Strongest & Longest Madd

Madd Lazim is the strongest and longest type of Madd — duration: 6 harakaat (obligatory).

Called Lazim because the sukoon causing it is original (not temporary).

Four types:
  1. Kalimi Muthaqqal: Madd + sukoon + shaddah in one word — e.g., "الحَاقَّة"
  2. Kalimi Mukhaffaf: Madd + original sukoon without shaddah — very rare
  3. Harfi Muthaqqal: In disconnected letters that extend and merge — e.g., Lam in "الم"
  4. Harfi Mukhaffaf: In disconnected letters that only extend — e.g., "يس، طه"
Example: "الم" at start of Al-Baqarah: Alif = 2 counts, Lam = 6 counts (Lazim Muthaqqal), Meem = 6 counts (Lazim Mukhaffaf)
