Intermediate Raa Rules Surah: Ash-Shuara (63)

Thinning of the Letter Ra (Tarqeeq) — Six Positions and Their Conditions

فَانفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَالطَّوْدِ الْعَظِيمِ
— الشعراء الآية 63
Definition:
Tarqeeq of Ra: pronouncing Ra without raising the tongue — no heaviness or emphasis is heard. Ra can be thin, heavy, or disputed depending on context.

Positions for thin Ra in Hafs:
1. Ra with an original Kasra: "Rizqa", "Fir'awn"
2. Sukoon Ra after an original Kasra within its word: "Firqa", "Mirya"
3. Sukoon Ra after an incidental Kasra followed by an elevated letter in the next word: "Am irtaabu" — disputed
4. Ra at end of a stop preceded by a silent Ya: "Khabeerun" (when stopping)
5. Ra at end of stop preceded by Kasra with no elevated letter after: "As-Sihr" (when stopping)
6. Ra in "Firaqin" [Ash-Shu'ara: 63] — thin by consensus

Quranic Example:
"Thamarat" — Ra is thin (has Kasra).
"Inna Rabbaka" — Ra is heavy (has Fatha).

Note:
An incidental Kasra (arising from meeting of two sukoons) generally does not cause thinning of Ra in Hafs.
