Surah: Al-Fatiha (5)
Optional Stopping — "Reassurance Stop" and "Stronger Start"
إِيَّاكَ نَعۡبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسۡتَعِينُ
— الفاتحة الآية 5
Types of Stopping (Brief):
Stopping divides into: Taam (preferred), Kaafi (permissible), Hasan (permissible with care), and Qabeeh (impermissible).
Optional Stopping:
This is the Taam or Kaafi stop the reader chooses voluntarily for breathing or reflection — not because the meaning requires stopping there.
The Reassurance Issue:
Some reciters, after a good stop, repeat the last word before the stop to verify correct pronunciation. This is acceptable pedagogically but is not Sunna in flowing recitation.
"The Stronger Start":
After stopping mid-verse, it is preferred to resume from a point that completes the meaning. Example: "Iyyaka nabudu wa iyyaka nastaeen" — stopping on "nabudu" alone is not ideal since the sentence is incomplete. The stronger start after stopping: "Wa iyyaka nastaeen."
Practical rule:
Always resume from a word that begins an independent or semi-independent sentence — avoid starting with a standalone conjunction "waw" if what precedes it is tightly linked.
