Intermediate Recitation Surah: Al-Nisa (43)

Waqf and Ibtida — Definition and Methodology

لَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَٰرَىٰ
— النساء الآية 43
Definition:
The science of Waqf (stopping) and Ibtida (beginning) studies the positions where a reciter may pause or resume during recitation of the Quran, preserving the meaning and ensuring correct understanding.

Four Categories of Waqf:
  1. Taam (Complete): Full semantic break — stopping and starting after it is correct.
  2. Kafi (Sufficient): Near-complete break — stopping is preferred, starting after is permitted.
  3. Hasan (Good): Independent meaning but the next phrase is syntactically linked.
  4. Qabih (Bad): Distorts meaning — voluntarily stopping here is impermissible.
Importance: Stopping at the wrong place can reverse the meaning — e.g., pausing at "Do not approach prayer" without completing the verse.
