Basic Quranic Sciences Surah: An-Nisa (82)

Meaning:
The Quran accords the intellect a high status — calling to reflection, pondering, and observation, and censuring those who do not reason or think.

Forms used:

• "Aql" (reason): "Will you not reason?" — "That you may reason" — approximately 49 times.
• "Tafakkur" (reflection): "Have they not reflected?" — 18 times.
• "Tadabbur" (pondering): "Will they not ponder the Quran?" — 4 times.
• "Nazar" (observation): "Will they not look?" — 30 times.
• "Tadhakkur" (remembering): "That they may remember" — 43 times.
• "Ilm" (knowledge): derivatives over 850 times — the most used root in the Quran.

Quranic emphasis on using the intellect:

1. Censure for disabling the intellect: "Deaf, dumb, blind — they do not reason." (2:171)
2. Prohibition of blind following: "We found our fathers upon a way" (43:23) — this logic is refuted.
3. Call to observe cosmic signs: "Do they not look at the camels?" (88:17)

Caution: Using the intellect in the Quran is bounded by sound transmitted knowledge — the intellect grasps arguments but does not create legislation.
