Introduction to Quranic Readings — Definition and Authority

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَتۡلُونَ كِتَٰبَ ٱللَّهِ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
— فاطر 29
Definition:
Qira'at (readings): methods of performing Quranic words — including imala and fath, madd and qasr, tashil and tahqiq, idgham and izhar — received by imams through continuous chains back to the Prophet ﷺ.

Authority of readings:
Every correct mutawatir reading is revealed Quran — passing Ibn Al-Jazari's three conditions: conformity with a Uthmani manuscript, conformity with Arabic, and authentic mutawatir chain.

Hadith: "The Quran was revealed in seven ahruf — recite from it what is easy." (Agreed Upon)

Importance: Preserving the Quran from alteration; expanding meanings; extracting jurisprudential rulings from differences.
