Prisoners of Badr — Ransom or Execution?
مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَن يَكُونَ لَهُۥٓ أَسۡرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يُثۡخِنَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
— الأنفال الآية 67
Occasion of Revelation (Sahih — Muslim & Tirmidhi):
After Badr (2 AH), key Qurayshi leaders were captured. The Prophet consulted his companions: Abu Bakr advised ransom; Umar advised execution. The Prophet chose Abu Bakr's view. Then was revealed: "It is not fitting for a prophet to take prisoners until he has made great slaughter in the land. You desire the gains of this world, but Allah desires for you the Hereafter." (8:67)
Ibn Masud narrated: The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr wept. Umar said: "What makes you weep?" The Prophet replied: "I was shown what was offered to your companions from ransom, and I was shown their punishment as close as this tree."
Significance:

Significance:
- Weakening the enemy takes precedence over collecting ransom
- Consultation does not prevent divine reprimand for error
- Umar was more correct here — the reprimand was disciplinary, not punitive
