The Hijab Verse — The Prophet's Marriage and the Guest Incident

وَإِذَا سَأَلۡتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَٰعٗا فَسۡـَٔلُوهُنَّ مِن وَرَآءِ حِجَابٖ
— الأحزاب الآية 53
Occasion of Revelation (Sahih — Bukhari):
Anas ibn Malik narrated: The Prophet ﷺ hosted a wedding feast for Zaynab bint Jahsh. After the guests ate, some stayed and kept talking. The Prophet was ready to leave but they did not rise. So the hijab verses were revealed, and a screen was drawn.

Significance:
  • Establishing adab (etiquette) of visiting and seeking permission in Islam
  • "That is purer for your hearts and their hearts" — legislation paired with its wisdom and cause
  • The ruling concerning the Mothers of the Believers extends in effect to the whole community
