Basic Purification Surah: Al-Maidah (6)

Obligatory Ghusl — Al-Maidah 6 and Its Occasions

وَإِن كُنتُمۡ جُنُبٗا فَٱطَّهَّرُواْ
— المائدة الآية 6
The verse: "And if you are in a state of janabah (major impurity), then purify yourselves." (Al-Maidah 5:6)

Occasions requiring ghusl (janabah):
  1. Sexual intercourse: Penetration even without ejaculation — "purify yourselves" and the hadith: "When the two circumcised parts meet, ghusl becomes obligatory" (Muslim).
  2. Ejaculation: With pleasure, whether awake or asleep.
  3. Menstruation and postpartum bleeding: After they end — "do not approach them until they are purified" (2:222).
  4. Conversion to Islam (majority view): For one who converted while in a state of janabah.
  5. Death: Washing the body of a deceased Muslim.
Obligatory elements of ghusl:
  • Intention — covering the entire body with water — rinsing the mouth and nose (according to Hanafi and Hanbali schools).
The recommended method (sunnah): "The Prophet washed his hands three times, then washed his private parts, then performed wudu, then poured water over his head three times." (Agreed upon)
