Tashil of Hamza — Who Softens It and How
ءَأَنذَرۡتَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تُنذِرۡهُمۡ
— البقرة الآية 6
Definition: Tashil of hamza: softening it between full hamza and the letter corresponding to its vowel movement — or replacing it with a madd letter or dropping it with compensation.
Warsh's types of tashil: (1) Naql: moving the hamza's vowel to the preceding sukun and deleting the hamza. (2) Ibdal: replacing hamza with a madd letter. (3) Tashil bayna bayna: between hamza and waw/ya.
Who softens? Most famous: Warsh, Abu Amr (Al-Duri), Ibn Kathir in some positions. Hafs: tahqiq (full pronunciation) in most positions, softening only in limited cases.
