Qalon's Narration from Nafi' — Characteristics and Spread

Biography:
Isa ibn Mina Al-Madani (d. 220H) — nicknamed "Qalon" (Greek/Byzantine for "good/excellent") by Nafi' as a compliment. A gifted reader in Medina, he was deaf yet recited with beautiful voice and high precision.

Characteristics compared to Warsh:
  • Madd: Shorter than Warsh — connected madd predominantly at medium level (4–5 harakaat)
  • Basmala: Allows connecting basmala with the two surahs together with ha' kinaya linking
  • Short disconnected madd: Allows qasr (2 harakaat) for al-madd al-munfasil in some paths
  • Hamza: More tahqiq than Warsh with some tashil
Spread: Libya, Tunisia, parts of Algeria and Morocco — the primary narration in Tunisian religious institutes.
