Basic Nations Surah: Al-Qasas (81)

Qarun — The Treasures, the Arrogance, and the Swallowing

Quranic context: Al-Qasas, verses 76-82

Context: Qarun was from the people of Musa — Allah gave him such treasures that their keys would burden a strong group of men. When his people advised him, he said: "I was only given it because of knowledge I possess" — attributing the wealth to his own knowledge and skill, not to Allah's favor.

Triple arrogance:
Arrogance of wealth: he adorned himself and went out to his people in display. Arrogance of knowledge: he attributed his wealth to his expertise. Arrogance of status: he despised the sincere advice of his believing people.

The immediate swallowing:
"We caused the earth to swallow him and his house — and he had no group to help him against Allah, and he was not among those who are helped." Swallowed with his house and treasures in one moment.

Lesson: "That abode of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon earth or corruption" — wealth is a trust, and arrogance with it is the prelude to destruction.
