Adam and Iblis — Theological Arrogance vs. Adam's Repentance
Quranic context: Al-Araf 11-25; Taha 115-122
Context: The angels and Iblis were commanded to prostrate to Adam — "They prostrated except Iblis — he refused and was arrogant." Asked for his reason, he said: "I am better than him — You created me from fire and created him from clay."
Theological arrogance:
Iblis did not disbelieve from ignorance of Allah — he disbelieved while knowing and understanding. His reasoning was flawed (fire > clay) and his disobedience was deliberate. Ibn Taymiyyah: the first sin in creation was arrogance and preference of personal opinion over divine command.
The difference between Adam and Iblis:
Adam sinned by eating from the tree — then "He turned to him in repentance and guided him." Iblis refused, persisted, and continued. The sin is not the difference — the reaction to the sin is.
Adam's repentance through words:
"Adam received words from his Lord" — Allah taught him how to repent: "Our Lord, we wronged ourselves — and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will be among the losers."
Lesson: What destroys a person is not the mistake — but persisting in the mistake and not returning. Iblis represents persistence; Adam represents the correct model for dealing with sin.
