Surah: Al-Baqarah (249)
Saul and Goliath — How Many Small Groups, and David Kills Goliath
Quranic context: Al-Baqarah, verses 246-251
Context: The Israelites requested a king to fight under his command after weakness and displacement. Allah sent Saul as king despite their objection to his poverty. Then the test: "Allah will test you with a river — whoever drinks from it is not of me." Most drank — "but when he crossed it with those who believed with him."
The eternal Quranic phrase:
"How many a small group overcame a large group by Allah's permission — and Allah is with the patient." This verse is a fixed divine principle in the history of battles.
David kills Goliath:
"David killed Goliath" — David's prophethood began at this moment. This indicates that Allah's selection of His prophets and leaders may come from the least in people's eyes.
Lesson: Numbers and equipment are not the criterion of victory — but the steadfastness of the small faithful group with Allah's company. Many divine openings began with a "small group" that refused to surrender.
