All Praise to Allah, Lord of All Worlds — The Meaning of Complete Praise
ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
— الفاتحة الآية 2
Verse: "All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds"
Reflection:
Allah opened His Book with "al-hamd" (praise) rather than "shukr" (thanks). The difference: thanks requires a benefit received by the thanker, while praise encompasses all attributes of perfection whether or not the praiser benefits. Praise is therefore more complete than thanks.
Al-Sadi said: "Al-hamd lilla is an affirmation that Allah possesses all praise and glory — and that this is intrinsic to His nature, because praise implies perfection."

- "Rabb" unites three meanings: Creator, Owner, and Nurturing Guardian
- "Al-'alamin" (worlds) is plural — every category of creation is a world: humans, jinn, angels, plants, animals…
- Joining "praise" with "Lord of all worlds" combines praise for Allah's intrinsic perfection and His generosity toward creation
