Mercy & Forgiveness
Surah: Al-Hijr (49)
Inform My Servants That I Am the Forgiving, the Merciful — Balance Between Fear and Hope
نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِيٓ أَنِّيٓ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
— الحجر الآية 49
Verse: "Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful — and that My punishment is the painful punishment." (15:49-50)
The Islamic balance:
These two verses unite the greatest lesson in spiritual education: Allah is forgiving and merciful, and His punishment is painful. Neither cancels the other.
Ibn Al-Qayyim: "The heart traveling to Allah is like a bird — its head is sincerity and its wings are hope and fear. When the head and both wings are sound, the flight is good — but if one wing is cut, it becomes prey."
Danger of excess hope: Leads to persisting in sin citing Allah's mercy.
Danger of excess fear: Leads to despair from Allah's mercy and resignation.
Prophetic hadith: "If the believer knew what punishment Allah has, none would hope for Paradise; if the disbeliever knew what mercy Allah has, none would despair of His mercy." (Muslim)
Lesson: Plant fear on days of activity and desire; plant hope on days of brokenness and repentance.
