Quranic Verse-Endings (Fawasil) — Definition and the Science of Ayah Endings

ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ۝ مَٰلِكِ يَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
— الفاتحة الآية 3
Definition:
A Fasilah is the final word of a Quranic verse — resembling a poetic rhyme in rhythm and musicality, yet distinct from poetry in that it is not bound by prosodic meter.

Types by Ending Sound:
  • Mutamathhila (Identical): Same final letter — e.g., endings in Surat al-Fatiha.
  • Mutaqariba (Similar): Similar letters — like Nun and Mim.
  • Mutawaziya (Balanced): Balanced rhythm without identical endings.
Significance: The Fasilah is not mere ornamentation — it carries the deepest meaning of the verse, serving as its summary and rhetorical peak.
