Al-Fatiha — Mother of the Quran: Its Names and Meanings
Reason for the name: Called "Mother of the Quran" and "Mother of the Book" because it encompasses all the objectives of the Quran in a single surah — just as "umm al-shay'" in Arabic means the origin and comprehensive source of something.

- Al-Fatiha: It opens the Mushaf in recitation and script, and every prayer begins with it.
- Umm al-Quran / Umm al-Kitab: It contains the foundational principles of the Quran — confirmed in the Two Sahihs: "Al-hamdulillah is Umm al-Quran."
- Al-Sab' al-Mathani: Seven verses repeated in every unit of prayer — "And We have given you seven of the oft-repeated (verses)" (15:87).
- Al-Wafiya: It is never divided unlike other surahs — always recited in full.
- Al-Shafiya / Al-Kafiya: Confirmed as a ruqya (healing recitation) — "What made you know it is a ruqya?" (Bukhari).
- Praise and monotheism: "All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds — the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful."
- Worship and seeking help: "You alone we worship, You alone we ask for help."
- Supplication, guidance, and purification: "Guide us to the Straight Path."
