Basic First Revelation Surah: Al-Qiyamah (16)

The Prophet Told Not to Rush the Revelation — Al-Qiyamah 16-19

لَا تُحَرِّكۡ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعۡجَلَ بِهِۦ
— القيامة الآية 16
Occasion of Revelation (Sahih — Agreed Upon):
When Jibril brought revelation, the Prophet ﷺ would move his lips, fearing he might miss something. So Allah revealed: "Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it." Ibn Abbas reported: Thereafter, the Prophet would remain still when Jibril came, and when he left he would recite exactly as Allah had promised.

Significance:
  • Allah guarantees both collection of the Quran in the Prophet's heart and its recitation
  • Allah also guarantees the clarification of its meanings to the Prophet
  • The Prophet need not worry — preservation is a divine responsibility
Related verse: "And do not hasten the Quran before its revelation is completed to you" (Taha: 114).
