Separation and Connection — When to Use "And" and When to Omit It
وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
— الأنفال الآية 2
Connection (wasl): Joining sentences with "wa" (and) — when sharing in ruling or topic.
Separation (fasl): Omitting "wa" — when new beginning, clarification, or complete disconnection.
Eloquent example: (8:2-3) — the first sentence is clarificatory so not joined; then "and" joins the next attribute to the previous.
Al-Jurjani's principle: "Connection and separation are among the most subtle and difficult chapters of rhetoric — they touch the relationship between sentences at its deepest level."
