Basic Purification Surah: An-Nisa (43)

Tayammum and Its Rulings — An-Nisa 43 and Al-Maidah 6

The two verses: An-Nisa 4:43: "And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes from the toilet, or you have been intimate with women and find no water, then seek clean earth (saeed tayib) and wipe your faces and hands with it."

Conditions for tayammum from the verse:
  1. Absence of water — or inability to use it due to illness or fear of harm.
  2. Saeed tayib (clean earth): Pure soil — some said: any surface of the earth (Al-Shafi and Ahmad restricted it to dust; Malikis and Hanafis broadened it).
  3. Wiping: The face and the palms — one or two strikes (scholarly difference).
Occasions requiring tayammum:
  • Minor ritual impurity (when no water is available).
  • Major ritual impurity (janabah and menstruation after it ends).
Nullifiers of tayammum:
  • Finding water — every nullifier of wudu — and the removal of the illness.
