The Teacher and the Chain — Why Memorizing from the Mushaf Alone Is Not Enough

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡيٞ يُوحَىٰ
— النجم الآية 3
The Quran's special nature in transmission:
The Quran is a transmitted science — it is distinguished from other sciences by being received through hearing and direct teaching, not reading alone. Ibn Al-Jazari said: "Between him and the sky is only three" — describing the brief chain to the Prophet ﷺ.

What the Mushaf cannot convey:
  • Precise letter articulation points (Dhad, Dhaa, Qaaf).
  • Letter attributes like tafashy, istitaala, and qalqala.
  • Lengths of elongations and reading variants.
  • Stopping and starting positions.
  • The correct melody and rhythm of recitation.

The role of the teacher:
The teacher certifies the student after testing their memorization and tajweed — this certification (ijaza) is a chain connected to the Prophet ﷺ. The certified memorizer who teaches others passes on this connected chain.

Practical reality:
If a specialized teacher is unavailable: listen to a scholar through audio with at least one correction from a recognized scholar, and record what you learned. But do not describe yourself as "a certified memorizer" without a connected ijaza.
