Verse: "And from the evil of an envier when he envies"

Reflection:
The verse qualifies the seeking of refuge from the envier with "when he envies" — meaning when his envy stirs and transforms from internal feelings into actual harm. In this qualification lies great precision: not everyone who carries a twinge of jealousy is a danger — the danger is when the twinge transforms into action, sorcery, or scheming.

Envy in the Quran's scales:

• Hasad (envy): wishing the removal of another's blessing — a serious heart disease
• Ghibtah (emulation): wishing for the like of another's blessing without its removal — permissible and even praiseworthy when directed toward good

"When he envies": An important qualifier — envy in the self, its owner is accountable for it, but external harm begins when it is acted upon.

How to deal with one who envies you:

• Do not display your blessings openly to all — concealment is half the protection
• Read the two refuge surahs morning and evening
• Pray for blessing upon those you fear may envy you
• Know that envy cannot harm except by Allah's permission

Ibn al-Qayyim said: "The one who knows Allah knows that envy harms the envied nothing except by Allah's will — so he takes refuge in Him, relies on Him, and does not preoccupy his heart with fear of the envious."
