Surah: Fussilat (44)
Tasheel — The Facilitated Hamza Between Hamza and a Long Vowel
وَلَوۡ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَانًا أَعۡجَمِيّٗا لَّقَالُواْ لَوۡلَا فُصِّلَتۡ ءَايَٰتُهُۥٓ
— فصلت الآية 44
Definition of Tasheel:
Technically: pronouncing the second of two consecutive hamzas with a sound between a full hamza and the long vowel matching its movement — between hamza and alif if fathaed, between hamza and waaw if dhammaed, between hamza and yaa if kasraed.
Tasheel in Hafs:
Hafs has tasheel in one well-known position: the word "A-Ajamiyyun" in Fussilat (verse 44). He has two readings here: the double interrogative with tasheel, or with an inserted alif between the two hamzas.
How to Pronounce Tasheel:
Lighten the second hamza so it is below a full hamza but above a pure long vowel — a medial sound. Example: in "A-Ajamiyyun," the second hamza is pronounced between hamza and alif.
Difference Between Tasheel and Ibdal:

Difference Between Tasheel and Ibdal:
- Tasheel: the hamza remains but is lightened (between hamza and long vowel).
- Ibdal: the hamza is completely transformed into a long vowel.
